Fractional Resurfacing

Fractional lasers belong to the rejuvenating laser devices. They are intended for removal of aging skin, scars (including acne scarring), wrinkles as well as dark pigmentation. The employed laser is capable to alleviate the skin porosity and pale complexion and to unify its color tone.

Unlike classical laser technologies, with fractional resurfacing, the laser beam is split into many tiny beams that penetrate deep into the skin. Around every treated spot, there remains an unharmed skin area which allows for rapid healing. Thanks to this technology, we can reach results that are comparable to the results of classical resurfacing with ablative lasers (grinding). However, the healing time and eventual risks are minimal.

The face is treated most often with fractional lasers. However, only a part of it can be treated, e.g. cheeks with acne scarring, eyes or mouth surroundings with fine wrinkles. Neck line and the arms'upper surface can be treated as well. The process requires topical anesthesia; half hour to an hour prior to the treatment, anaesthetic ointment has to be applied. The laser treatment itself takes approximately 30 - 45 minutes for the face. The patient can experience some burning sensation on more sensible face areas. This depends on the laser intensity as well as on the skin sensibility. The treated parts are chilled right after the treatment. The healing time is between 2 and 7 days. The skin will turn red at first. Gradually, the untreated spots will become pale while the treated areas become slightly dark at spots of laser penetration. There are tiny brownish spots visible on the skin which will gradually peel off. No direct exposure to sun is allowed at least during 2-3 months after the treatment.

The treatment cannot be performed with pregnant women and with persons who are prone to keloid scars. Caution is advised when treating people with psoriasis and vitiligo indications. The rejuvenating process continues long after healing. The remodeling and collagen production remains deep in the skin for up to three months. All the time, the patient experiences gradual smoothing of skin's surface.
